WEARING ORANGE IRL:
So you’ve taken a screenshot of your fave color combinations above (if you haven’t maybe scroll back up for it!) but NOW WHAT?
Now you get to integrate your colorful pieces together – ultimately up to you but since you were here for inspo anyways here are some ideas:
- Make it the focal point by pairing with less vividly colored other items
- EX. A vivid true orange top with a soft yellow mini skirt. This works because the orange remains a focal point against the soft yellow, but because they’re close on the color wheel they feel less high contrast or abrasive against each other.
- Play with pattern choosing coordinating or just fun patterned items to surround your focal piece with
- EX. A vivid tangerine orange top paired with a patterned orange fruit and green leaf pattern. This combination allows you to pull from multiple color sources for accessories but pulls attention most of all to the orange.
- EX. Pairing an orange top with a rainbow patterned skirt and, if youre feeling bold, layer a cow print too like Imani has on below!
- Make the outfit a party by choosing all items of equal brightness / intensity.
- EX. Pairing a vivid yellow-orange top paired with hot pink pants, then finishing with equally bright purple accessories.
- EX. Pairing a patterned starry orange top with a western hot pink cow print skirt! (like my bestie Imani rocks in the pic below)
- Monochromatic methods may seem obvious to some but I think it’s underappreciated.
- EX. Instead of all the same shade of orange, consider pairing a yellow-orange top with a darker orange skirt, with a fun neon orange purse! I think the varying shades can really elevate a “simple” concept.
- The “Sandwich Method” aka matching your top to your shoes in one color and SANDWICHING a second color between them as your bottoms.
- EX. Pairing bright orange top with a soft blue mini skirt and orange go go boots or patterned orange vans. The blue is the middle of your orange sandwich! Bon apetit babes.
- EX. Similarly, you can reuse the sandwich method with the concept of a hair scarf / hat / or headband matching your outfit bottoms, sandwiching the main color in the center. Matching a bright green hair scarf with bright green pants sandwiches orange beautifully, and brownie points if you add one more color with a button up too like Kam did with pink in the pic below!
- Warm Tones only to integrate orange – think anything cozy warm such as yellows, reds, pinks, and of course orange.
- EX. Choose any items in warm colors and focus on choosing tones that clash minimally when held together in real life. Not all reds and yellows look beautiful together and sometimes they feel like a McDonalds outfit of the day and unless thats the goal I think we can do better!
- Remember, the more similar the tones the less they clash. Perhaps if you’re looking for easy outfits with color consider pairing yellow and white sneakers with pink cargo pants, and an orange top with an orange-toned red bag!
